Someday our ocean will find its shore

today I just felt like going to the sea, so that was what I did: taking the train to Zandvoort – one of the good things of being a student in the netherlands is that you get this public transport pass- and from there I walked to the beach, which is just two minutes away from the station. As T.S. Eliot put it “I will walk upon the beach/and wear my trousers rolled” (The Lovesong of Alfred J. Prufrock). For two hours I walked on the sand barefoot, waded around in the icy cold water, looked at the gulls, the people, the kitesurfers, and the waves, collected some shells, and listened to the waves. I’ve seen the sea in Sweden, Italy, France and Northern Ireland, but seas never fail to fascinate me. The sea is a contradiction in itself, both full of time and timeless, an end and endless, a place in itself and placeless, tugged at by gravity yet somehow so free. Being there -and feeling like a kite set free- made me think about songs that are somehow sea-like. Two songs that definitely are sea-like are “Ghost Song” by Patrick Wolf and “Time Has Told Me” by Nick Drake. “Time Has Told Me” is quite unique because it has a strong sense of seeing beauty in brokenness. Because you cant post songs here, i’ll post the lyrics:

Ghost Song by Patrick Wolf

While I’m asleep
My spirit crawls out
Of my belly button
And goes down to the sea

To gather the wind
The wires and the shore
To wander the hills
Like a day gone before

When beauty was in season
Oh! Beauty in season!
Endangered by reason
Great love with no law

Today I woke
And my spirit was gone
Still on the shore
Where he truly belongs

So I call
For him
Across
The wind
And
Rain

To come and bring beauty
Back in season
Oh! Beauty in season!
I’m in danger of reason
Losing love to this law

To this….

Time Has Told Me by Nick Drake

Time has told me
You’re a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
Someday our ocean
Will find its shore.

So I`ll leave the ways that are making me be
What I really don’t want to be
Leave the ways that are making me love
What I really don’t want to love.

Time has told me
You came with the dawn
A soul with no footprint
A rose with no thorn.

Your tears they tell me
There’s really no way
Of ending your troubles
With things you can say.

And time will tell you
To stay by my side
To keep on trying
’til there’s no more to hide.

So leave the ways that are making you be
What you really don’t want to be
Leave the ways that are making you love
What you really don’t want to love.

Time has told me
You’re a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
For some day our ocean
Will find its shore.
